Ear Correction Surgery in Iran (Otoplasty)

Some people who are born with a defect in their ears structure, and the others who suffer from misshapen ears caused by injuries, opt to undergo an otoplasty, or ear correction surgery, to correct the shape of their ears.

Prominent or protruding ears can limit the number of the sports one can do, limit hairstyles, make you hear unfriendly comments, and last but not least make you less confident.

Ear correction surgery, also known as otoplasty surgery, aims to help you have symmetric and well-formed ears and natural looking appearance.

During the process the surgeon may resize, reshape, and reposition the ears, or use a combination of all three.

Otoplasty for children: To reach the best result it is highly recommended that the surgery be done on children more than 5, as at that age the cartilage is firm enough for the reshaping. Surgery under the age of 5 is not recommended as it carries high risk.

Otoplasty procedure takes less than 3 hours and leaves no visible scars.

Before Surgery

It is recommended to follow some general guidelines before otoplasty. Some of these guidelines are as follows:

•    Avoid taking any kind of medication containing Acetylsalicylic acid, such as aspirin, as the risk of bleeding during the surgery would increase.
•    Get pre-operative examination.
•    Make sure that at least 3 weeks before the surgery you have not suffered from any viral illness including measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, and shingles.
•    A day before the operation wash your hair.
•    Avoid wearing makeup or earrings on the day of the surgery.

Otoplasty procedure

Ear correction surgery or otoplasty can take 2 to 3 hours, and can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

To perform the surgery the skin will be removed and the surgeon will reshape cartilage from behind the ears. As the incisions are made behind the ears, no scars will be left after the surgery.

Generally speaking there are three main methods for performing the surgery, including ear augmentation, otopexy, and ear reduction.

•    Ear augmentation is required if the pinna is underdeveloped.
•    Otopexy flattens protruding ears using an ear pinback.
•    Ear reduction reduces too large pinna.
It is noted that otoplasty can also be done by ENT or pediatric surgeons.

Otoplasty aftercare

For several days after the surgery you need bandages over the ears. While the bandages are in place, you are not able to wash your hair.
To help remove the tension from the ears you need to wear a loose supportive headband over the ears at night.
Wait at least 2 weeks after the surgery to restart exercise and regular activity, and 3 months for physical contact activities such as judo, football, and so on. Avoid swimming for at least 8 weeks after the operation.
To prevent possible infection the surgeon may prescribe antibiotics.
Otoplasty recovery time is relatively short, and you can resume your work and daily routine after a week.
Otoplasty for babies? It is recommended to wait for ear correction surgery at least till the baby is 3 years old so that ears have reached their full size.
