IVF process
In Vitro Fertilization means that the fertilization of ovum (ova) and sperm happens outside the body in a laboratory. The process has several distinct steps that take place over a period of time.
Here is a simple description of the whole procedure:
You need to get some injections to make your ovaries into producing more ova.
For checking on the development of the eggs the medical team will monitor you throughout your treatment with ultrasound and blood tests. Once your eggs are mature enough your doctor starts the egg retrieval procedure. This procedure is performed under light sedation and takes up to 20 minutes.
Then the man is asked to contribute a fresh sperm sample. After that to separate out the most active and healthy sperm for fertilization, the sperm undergoes a washing and spinning process.
Then your eggs and your partner’s or donor’s sperm will be combined in the lab. To make sure that the fertilization has taken place, the eggs will be examined after a period of 16 to 20 hours. It is noted that in another process, called ICSI, sperm is injected into the center of the egg. To give the fertilized eggs a great head start, before being transferred they are allowed to grow for up to 6 days in the lab.
Once your doctor selects the highest quality embryo and places it into uterus you are officially pregnant. However, it is noted that the implantation may take between 1 to 5 days.
To make sure that the implantation has been successful, a pregnancy test will be performed 2 weeks after the transfer.
Our team monitors you for the first 10 weeks of your pregnancy.
After the process
IVF is painless for most women, however, it is normal to experience mild cramping.
Though it is better to take it easy after the procedure, most women can resume their daily activities the following day.
It is also normal to experience constipation and breast tenderness.
However, if you experience symptoms like heavy vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, blood in the urine, and fever over 38 °C call your doctor immediately.
It is also noted that the chance of multiple pregnancy, premature delivery, and low birth weight is increased with IVF.
