During travelling to Iran you will see many Ice houses (glaciers) which were used to keep ice in order to use in hot days of summer in past and it shows the intelligence and art of the architecture of that time. Zarisof Ice House in Kerman is one of the many remaining ice houses in Kerman and is a membrane of the Qajar era that is located on Shohada Street (Zarisof St.). Architectural methods in Iran are very beautiful and interesting, so that Iranian architects will find a solution for any problems. Before the invention of electrical appliances, the residents of desert built glaciers with brick for storing ice to use in hot summer days. To cool the houses, they put up long windcatchers (Badgir). To get water into towns, they made some Qanats in the ground. The oldest Qanats are in the provinces of Khorasan, Kerman and Yazd. Currently, a number of Kerman's Qanats are being used. Zarisof Ice House in Kerman is made of materials such as clay and mud, and from its parts reservoir, fence, ice pits and pool can be noted. There are two corridors in the Zarisof Ice House one for entering and storing ice and another for taking ice. The glaciers were shaped with a cone shape that had the least absorption of sunlight at the top. To keep the ice cool, they built tall walls like fence around glaciers, with a 12 meter high. They transmitted water from the canals through the glaciers and, at cold winter nights, spread water at levels to freeze, and this was done so that the ice diameter reached 40 centimeters. After that they cut ice in the form of molds and stored in the Zarisof Ice House. On each layer, ice was covered with straw, and one or two wells were placed down the floor of the ice cabin, leaving water out of the ice cube melts.
