Sepahsalar Mosque is one of the oldest and biggest mosques of Tehran. The mosque with a school having the same name is geographically located close to Baharestan, the Iranian Parliament. In 1879, one of the pioneer of Iran during the kingdom of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar named Mirza Hosein Sepahsalar ordered to construct the mosque. The construction process of the first part last for five years. Although the mosque was renamed as Shahid Motahhari after the Islamic Revolution of Iran, it is still famous as Sepahsalar Mosque and School among local people. The mosque has a distinctive feature which is its eight minarets. In Persian architectural style of mosques, this is considered unique. Sepahsalar Mosque is a monument beautifully depicting the combination of Persian architecture and Turkish one for mosque building. The construction of Sepahsalar Mosque with its fantastic structure and having a special dome was inspired by Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul and Jameh mosque and Chaharbagh School in Isfahan.
