Tughrul Tower is an 11th-century structure. This brick tower is 20 meters tall and belonged to Seljuq ruler Tuğrul Beg, who died in Rey in 1063. Just like other structures of its time, it was crowned by a conical cupola that adds to its height. The dome was destroyed during an earthquake. Due to its special architecture, Toghrol Tower in Shahr-e- Rey is not just a simple tower, but it has different usages. It was used as a Sundial, travelers’ guide and echoing the sound. If you stand in the center of this tower, the sound echoes as if there are several microphones in front of you. Echoing the sound is one of the special features of this tower, and it is said that the tower was the speech place of elders and high ranked officials where everyone could hear them. Besides, setting fire above the tower helped the travelers and caravans to find their ways at night, and it was a guide for those who came from Khorasan to Rey. After the Iranian Revolution, the tower was an abandoned structure until it was renovated in 2000.
