Sir Cathedral is one of the historical and religious buildings in the West Azerbaijan Province. Walls and ceiling of this stone made church are arranged with unordered rocks in an extremely skillful way. Sir Cathedral consists of two parts, one, which includes a very short entrance, a prayer hall, altar and surrounding rooms. And, the other one, includes some small rooms that are connected to the altar. The simple interior design is covered with plaster and then painted. There is a small space at the back of the church that has a room and a cellar below it. The authentic name of this church is Marsargiz church which belongs to Christians. In accordance with the architectural style and Assyrian historians’ book, Sir Cathedral dates back to the pre-Islamic era and it was established at the time of Khosrow Parviz, who was the last great king of the Sasanian Empire. This church which has a great religious value, is a common church for all Christians, including Armenians, Assyrians, Catholics, and Protestants. The Christians living in Urmia and the surrounding villages respect the church a lot and sacrifice sheep during an interesting ceremony each year from June to November.
