Alavian Dam in Maragheh is located in the eastern part of Azerbaijan province, 3 km north of Maragheh, near the village of Alavian, in the foothills of Mount Sahand. The dam is located on the Sufi Chai River and provides drinking water for cities of that region such as Maragheh, Miandoab, Bonab, Ajabashir, and Malekan. Besides, it provides water for farms and some factories of that zone. The constructing operation started in 1990 and was finished in 1995. Due to the picturesque and unique area around Alavian Dam in Maragheh, it has got a significant consideration by foreign and domestic tourists and citizens of Maragheh. To reach the dam, tourist will pass through the Maragheh and beautiful gardens which cover that district. One of the biggest Horse breeding centers is also located near the dam and has been an interesting place for tourists and athletes.
