Gonbad-e Kabud also known as Burj-e Kabud or blue tower is geographically located in Maragheh in the East Azerbaijan Province. Although some historians doubt about the exact time when Gonbad-e Kabud was built, most believe that this construction dates back to Seljuk dynasty. Decorations used in building it could not be found frequently in other constructions of that era and this feature made it stand out among other historical monuments of Maragheh. The decagon Burj-e Kabud owned a conical dome which unfortunately has been ruined throughout different periods. This dome was made of two parts of Sardabeh and the main room. An inscription inside the Maragheh Blue Tower shows that this place was used as the mausoleum. Islamic words in different scripts such as Kufic are on the walls to make it more beautiful. The exterior parts of the tower were designed with different geometric shapes and Maqranas and the interior were painted with turquoise paintings. Unfortunately some of these paintings were also ruined and only a small part of it is visible these days.
